It has been said about rock critics that, "Those who can't 'do', criticize'". Every so often I can swear that I hear the ascerbic tongue of R. Christgau in some of the younger generation of 'heads. Yea, I'm old and can say that. Anyway, Phil gets to "do" whatever he wants to. The show doesn't "belong" to the listener. It's ART, f'er chrissakes. It ain't always gonna' be wrapped in a pretty package with a tidy bow. Not that Phil's ART isn't. I personally love the guy's singing. It's primal and unpolished but that's one of that voice's best qualities. Dig it or don't but above all, don't cast aspersions about something you can't "do" yourself. Upload some of your "stuff", man. I'm sure you'll find critics crawlin' outta' the woodwork to have a swat at you.
Liked the show, DL'd it and am passing it on to others. 4 and change.
Best,
-NWR

Anybody who thinks phil shouldn't sing is definatley green on the scene. Been there, done that. Phil is the man. Accept this and enjoy the music that is close to his heart....or DON'T!!

When I was in the crowded Hard Rock Casino/Hotel, i was holding up a sign that said, "I NEED A MIRACLE FOR PHIL" hoping to get a ticket, and i got one. the show was so intimate, i got up to like the second row and it was just amazing. i wish i could thank the guy who gave me that free ticket, it really was a miracle that i got to go in. i had so much fun!!! phil played a great show. i'm definitely going to buy an extra ticket to an upcoming show, and give someone else the feeling i got of getting a miracle, it's amazing. -Cassie

I happen to like Phil's singing. It warms my heart every time I hear him. He has a perspective on the music that no one else does. Those who say his voice isn't up to their demanding standards will next be telling Bob Dylan to shut up.
May you sing loud and clear forever, Phil -- and Bob!

I know , you may think this rating is a bit critical , but although the show is well played, I've got the lower half of my 12 band equalizer bottomed out, and it's still too deep. I love Phil, but this is too muddy . Hopefully someone will post a cleaner copy of this show . Who knows , maybe this is how it actually sounded in the house, I hope not . Not to change the subject ....... but does anyone know what happened to the Grateful Dead shows on this site ? Two thirds vanished and the rest are for streaming only. I had no problem last night downloading shows, but that was then ... and this is now . What's up ?

Some of the music here is absolutely transcendent, Barry Sless' slide playing really captures the right space and tone for so many GD songs.
BUT Phil cannot and should not sing, not one note! I dont know how much of what kind of drugs you have to take for that to be acceptable.
You know how the GD family (groupies) killed Jerry by not intervening in his health problems??
Someone needs to intervene here.......

I remember seeing a review of the Bonner Springs, KS P&F show from Summer 2000 where someone said Phil played "The worst Eyes Of The World" he'd ever heard.
Too bad what Phil actually played was the Peter Gabriel song "In Your Eyes" - and given all that had happened in the preceeding 5 years - it was a powerful, poignant statement from one of the great artists of the 20th (and 21st!) centuries.
The level of artistic risk this particular concert displays is further proof that Phil Lesh is truly committed to his own musical development, and by extention - to Our Trips.
There were people who said Phil would be Dead in the Water without Steve Kimock five years ago. I guess we'll have to see what the next five years bring! I've seen Larry Campbell with Bob Dylan (and David Kemper on Drums) 6 times - he's a PHENOMENAL musician - I can't wait to hear him Bring IT with Phil. WINTER TOUR '05 is going to SMOKE!!!

Obviously Jimmy will be missed, but I am confident that Phil will have the ability to put on quality shows for the end of the tour. For someone to suggest that something is wrong with Phil or the quality because others have played with him and moved on is silly. Many great band leaders, Coltrane - Davis - Shorter - the Bird - Santanna - Zappa, had people come and go without something being wrong.
As for the show it is great and worth the download. Yes there is a re-interpretation of some of "Jerry's" songs, but Jerry often re-interpreted them himself. In fact I think Jerry once said once you have it perfect it is time to change it.
Good show and defintely well played and fun to listen to.

All the glowing reviews of the gig are dead on. This is one hot potato of a show, even surpassing the Sam Boyd show the day before. The recording quality is also
excellent.
Sadly, this is Jimmy Herring's last show with the band for the time being. He leaves some tough shoes to fill.
Joan shines throughout and Barry Sless is, as always, the ace in the hole in this band. Check out his wonderful pedal steel work on Pride Of Cucamonga. Jerry would be proud.
Thanks for the upload. Ya done good!!

This version of Box of Rain is amazing, especially since the band had been going from about midnight to 5AM vegas time. The sound quality is great. Amazing show, thanks for a great job. This has me completely pumped for the P&F show at Boston University in a few weeks.
